Paula and Dean’s 1917 Dutch Colonial home was originally owned by a railroad executive and his wife, but is best known as the “Bulldog House.” Back in the ’80s the owners had two stone life-sized bulldogs in front of the home. The dogs were always dressed up for holidays, sporting little Halloween costumes, elf outfits, and of course they wore a team jersey when the Georgia Bulldogs played. Paula and Dean have put their touch on the home by completely renovating the kitchen, which had not been updated since the 1980s. Now it has the look of a 1900s kitchen with all the modern conveniences.
In the library, notice the portrait of Paula’s grandmother with her grandfather. He was a colonel in the Civil War and is buried in Oakland Cemetery. The Joneses have collected several paintings from their travels around Europe, the Caribbean, and the United States, which can be found throughout the home. Their daughter, Holly Jones-Yost, is a professional photographer and numerous photos are on display. The den was designed around two of her unique photos taken in Sweden. Homeowner Dean is also an artist and his painting of the home is on display in the dining room.
In keeping with the 1900s tradition, the home is decorated with greenery highlighted with small white lights. The larger of two trees is in the sunroom, adding a festive feeling to Clairemont Avenue. A smaller “family” tree is in the den where the family can enjoy it.
The Joneses like living in Decatur and being able to walk to shops and restaurants and the library is high on their list. The diversity of the homes impresses realtor Paula, who likes that no two are alike and there is something for everyone!
